JIM Rudd moved to The Oaks about 50 years ago and has been giving to the community ever since.

For this reason Mr Rudd was named Wollondilly Shire’s 2010 Citizen of the Year on Australia Day.

He has been Santa for The Oaks Christmas Night for the past 5 Years. But also Santa to The Oaks for over 30 years.

He has been caretaker of The Oaks community hall for about 20 years, mopping and polishing the timber floors, cleaning toilets, removing rubbish, maintaining lawns - all for free.

Mr Rudd has also been involved in fundraising activities at The Oaks, including at The Oaks Catholic Church, delivering items for the St Vincent de Paul Society and volunteering for Meals on Wheels.

He is also known for hearing of an Oakdale family with a severely disabled son and organising a raffle which raised $5000 to help buy a wheelchair.

A tireless volunteer at the age of 80, Mr Rudd said he did not know who had nominated him for the award.

“It was a surprise and a great honour,” he said.

“I’ve always been happy here in the shire and I get along with everyone.”

His nomination form said he has been sorely missed since his retirement from much of his volunteer work.
